Tell us a bit about you and what you do.

I live in Chicago with my partner and two cats and love it. I’m a Virgo Sun and Virgo Rising (I joke that planning is my hobby), part-time yoga teacher, and make handmade hats for my brand, Imparfae.

How did you find your creative practice?

I’ve always been a creative human. I learned how to sew as a child (my grandmother was an amazing home sewer) and was in every art class I could possibly enroll in.

When did Imparfae become more than a hobby?

Like a lot of people, I rediscovered a love for sewing during quarantine and started making hats for myself and friends out of deadstock fabric and organic cotton. Around December 2020 I decided I wanted to create a brand to share my love for hats with people outside my immediate circle, while being part of the push for ethical, just, and sustainable fashion.

Where do you find inspiration?

Oh gosh so many places! I have a lot of my best ideas when on walks in the city or talking ideas with fellow creatives - there is so much inspiring energy in Chicago.

How do you define your style?

Minimalist, but a bit quirky and also super cozy? Honestly it really depends on my mood and the time of year!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to get things right the first time - instead just learn from the experiences.

Any tips for fellow creatives?

Don’t compare yourself to other people’s journeys and success because you are on your own path that makes sense for you.

What do you do first thing in the morning?

I have two cats, so they make it very clear they would like to be fed first (lol). But after I feed them, I make myself some coffee and water my plants, while listening to a podcast or doing Duolingo (trying so hard to learn a second language!)

What’s a typical day look like for you?

Everyday is honestly different depending on what I need to get done, but typically consists of the following: drinking lots of coffee, sewing a hat or two, going on a long walk in my neighborhood, and cooking dinner with my partner. I teach yoga, so a few times a week I will be at the studio to teach, and another few times to practice.

Perfect Date night?

Pasta and Old Fashioneds at Ciccio Mio, with a walk along the river afterwards! I don’t live downtown, so it’s alway fun to get dressed up and go out in that area. If ever in Chicago, I could not recommend enough!

Where would you take someone visiting Chicago?

— To Eat: Big Kids Chicago
— To Drink: The California Clipper
— To Shop: Gemini, Humboldt House
— To Do: Walk the 606 while stopping at Ipsento 606 for coffee

What do you do to get out of a creative funk?

Go on a walk while listening to music. The energy and life of the city always inspires me!

How about to unwind?

I love a glass of red wine while making dinner with my partner or a mug of ginger tea before bed. Also a bath while watching Sex and the City on my laptop can do wonders.

What is something most people would be surprised to find out about you?

I love to cook, but i’m really not that great at it. That’s okay though - it’s still so fun!
