Our Process

A lot more goes into making these pieces than one might think – here’s the play-by-play.

Clay Selection

Arguably the most important step in the process is selecting a clay that is strong enough for everyday use. Luckily, polymer clay is very accessible because it can be found in most craft store. The Sculpey brand is the most easily sourced in the US so that’s generally what we use for our creations.

Conditioning + Color Mixing

To begin, it is important to condition the clay by rolling it out over and over again – much like kneading dough, this process can be done by hand or using a machine. During the conditioning process, we mix colors together to create marbling effects or a completely unique to colors.

Creating

When the clay is fully conditioned it is rolled out to an even depth with a mindful eye to eliminate any texture or air bubbles that might present themselves. At this stage we may add more clay for a pattern effect or add some intentional texture. Once we are satisfied with the ‘slab,’ we’ll use cookie cutters to cut out various shapes that will become earring components.

Baking

Baking is arguably the most important part of the process. Without properly curing the clay, it will be brittle and easily broken. The great thing about polymer clay is that it’s non-toxic so we bake to the precise temperatures right in our home oven and follow the instructions on the packet (all clay brands bake at different temperatures).

Finishing

Often, a rough edge will be discovered after the curing process. When sanding we’ll start with the 400 grit and work my way up from 600 to 1200 and finally 2000. After each component is sanded, holes will be drilled for where the metal findings with connect the pieces.

Assembling

Each earring with get assembled with jump rings, then backed with stainless steel posts, and then placed on an earring card ready and waiting to find their new forever home with you.
